Word Flow - Learning Roots!

Today we started using the "Word Flow" From Learning Roots masha Allaah!

There are 92 high frequency words used in the Qur'aan in the form of flash cards. Masha Allaah as I am following the Glenn Doman's method for reading with Maimoonah these cards are great for her Arabic Reading. These cards also have the meaning of the Arabic word in English.

This week we chose three cards and altogether 6 words. Since I am teaching Maimoonah Fatha Kasrah and Dhamma I intend to make her familiar with these cards the haraqaat as well as the formation of different letters along with sight reading Insha Allaah!

I hope Learning Roots comes out with more products like this may be an enhanced version on making sentences found in the Qur'aan. Can be also a puzzle kind of a thing where when the child is familiar with these words they are able to identify words and put them together Insha Allaah!

These cards could also be used for many other purposes I guess. At the moment I am using for what I have mentioned above as Maimoonah grows may be we can think of other ways too bi idhnillaah!

Sisters who have used these cards and have their suggestions please do share Insha Allaah!

I feel these cards are really good for especially non Arabic speaking, writing mothers so that they can make themselves as well as their kids familar with the words of Allaah Insha Allaah!

As Salaamu Alaikum little buddy lol!

Baraka'Allaahu'Feekum for your kind words that you left on my post.

Now back to business lol....I think Glenn Doman method is using flash cards but like a speed method? Is that right? Does his method include learning the ABC's? Because I think I saw a video about his school and I think he was explaining that his method included flash cards, like pictures with facts about the subject-and he was saying not to go slow with the cards but to go fast? Is this correct or is this the wrong person?
I remember I was very interested in his method.
Susu needs another method outside of your baby can read....she has become bored with it. Yara loves it.......but I want to do something different.
What do you think?

Alaikum salaam sis,

Well I really thought the program you use "Your Baby Can Read" is from Glenn Doman and that it is his method. What you have seen in the video is correct. Yes he says to flash cards and do it fast and quickly get on the books. And also what you have seen is his other program "How to give your baby encyclopaedic knowledge"

You are correct. Glenn Doman says not to introduce ABC nor phonics as he says it will make the progress of reading slow. After they learn to read you can teach all of this he says. Practically this is a method to teach children to read without stress and to start at a very early age and learn to read while playing.

But many sisters have concerns about this method. For me it works and Maimoonah enjoys so Insha Allaah I am continuing. I would not say this is the best for everyone but its good for us Insha Allaah!

Now am confused with what are you using then? Isnt it the same?

As Salaamu Alaikum

I use "Your Baby Can Read" .....it has videos, flash cards, and books. It doesn't have that rapid flash card session as that one your using.
I heard about that method before your baby can read.
Your Baby Can Read is the same in the sense that he uses flash cards with words like "Elephant" "Baby" "Tiger"...not traditional sight words "The" "I" "Me"....his videos incoporate music/poems/games...which I don't like. So when did Maimoonah learn the ABC's? What words have you taught her to read? Does the method you use come with video? Audio? Do you apply that with Arabiic too?

Alaikum salaam sis Umm Suhailah,

Actually Maimoonah learnt all the Arabic and English alphabets and sounds when she was 11 months masha Allaah. I started the Glenn Doman method of reading after that. So she actually knew the alphabets and sounds before. But it did not make a big drawback masha Allaah and she learnt to read words and still learning masha Allaah. I initially started off with printing words on A4 sheets and later I started writing words on the whiteboard. And still I continue to write on the whiteboard and to check her learning I type the same word on Yahoo Messenger and she reads masha Allaah. This is just to check if she identifies the words in writing and as well is on print. No pictures or music or videos involved masha Allaah!

Also I give her the books to read. Before she reads that book she learns the words in the book and when she reads the book she knows all the words in it. Masha Allaah so far this works.

All what I have mentioned in my posts that she can read on her own is what she can read so far Insha Allaah. For example she can read

"Allaah is my Lord. He created everything. He created the animals and birds, people and countries. He created us to worship Him alone. Allaah wakes me up each day. He created the day and night.

Maimoonah loves Abi and Ummi and she obeys her parents".... etc etc etc.

So masha Allaah reading has improved a lot and she is catching up fast masha Allaah. I like this method and it works well with us so far.

As for Arabic I am not very confident with my Arabic so things are slow. But I have started teaching her alphabets and sounds in Arabic and now started introducing these Word Flow cards. So lets see how it goes Insha Allaah!

Alaikum salaam sis Umm Muhammad,

How are you and how is your daughter! Did not hear from you for sometime! We are well Alhamdulillaah!

The cards do not have the transliteration. Only the Arabic and the meaning. I find it easy for me since there is haraqaat. But may be Learning Roots can include the transliteration in their next edition Insha Allaah!

Assalaamu'alaykum dear sis,

Mashaa Allaah!

I have a question, how did you introduce the arabic letters and sounds to an 11month old, mashaa Allaah!

Wassalaam

Umm Maimoonah said...

Alaikum salaam Umm Ayman,

Well same concept dear sis : ) Just show the flash card and I say it everyday. Show A and say this is A and show alif and say this is Alif. After she knew all the alphabet I told her A makes the sound a and so on. She started looking at the flash cards and she said A, B, C and so on. Never have I asked her to repeat at that age.

Assalamu aleikum ua rahmatullahi ua barakatuh!

Alhamdulillah, just today I realized that can use the Glen Doman's method for Quran reading and came across your inspiring post. Over 5 years has passed since you were teaching you daughter. How are you? How is Maimoonah doing? Can you please share your progress since that time and what would you improve? Shall I also show the picture of what the printed word means so that child also understands what I am showing him?
I have 2 years old son and in sha Allah just planning to start. Would be glad to receive the feedback from you.

Jazakillahu khayran!
